I love how the French are always making out in their films that they're a bunch of hard bastards that would beat you to death with a baguette for mentioning their battle cowardice, when, in truth, they do tend to be the first reaching for the white flag if there is a subtle mention of war. This is a bit like every other prison based film you've ever seen; gang politics, shivings, and yard confrontations, so in that sense there is some déjŕ vu, but without the usual Americanised bullshit that you get with the genre.

Amazing film, makes a refreshing change to see a noir film set in a prison with no bumming. Tahar Rahim has a bright future in front of him. Possibly not as bright as Malik though. This years first must see - fuck Avatar.

Another excellent gritty french movie, not out on the cinema here till next week, but a belter copy available via certain sources . Basically about an arabian man who builts up a criminal empire from jail, is forced into murdering another Arab man or face death himself. He accepts this task, and then the film really beging to boom. Pretty Brutal in parts, weird moments where you see the ghost of the first person he killed talking to him.
