Project Hail Mary (2026) - 6/10
This film is less of a sci-fi movie and more of a feature length version of your favourite DIYing YouTuber developing a buddy comedy with a talking space turd whilst having an existential crisis. There are more comedic one liners than astrophysics and, with the entire human-race back home on earth presumably shitting their pants over the dying sun, this multi-limbed space engineer is basically delivering cosmic deadpan like it’s an open mic night in zero gravity. Who would have thought that a granite space crab would end up having a sharper sense of humour than most people back on Earth? They learn to communicate much too quickly for my liking; it took Amy Adams the best part of 90 minutes to understand a fucking word the aliens in Arrival were saying. That seems much more reasonable to me. I mean, it takes my colleagues sixteen emails and two team meetings to decide on whether the ambient temperature of the office is right or not. This is just a bit too far-fetched for me, and there are well too many assumptions to be had. All in all, it's just a bit ridiculous. The book is the same, to be fair. Maybe I just prefer the sort of sci-fi where everyone dies, because fuck the majority of humanity.
